Technology has the greatest educational value when it makes clinical information easier to see, compare, discuss and understand. It should support teaching rather than distract from it.

UBC reported in 2011 that the paired Kanani Conference Rooms had matching technology and that large monitors improved how student groups learned together. That detail explains why the rooms were more than renovated square footage. They were intended to support shared attention, small-group discussion and visual comparison.

Shared displays and clinical material

Dentistry is a visually intensive profession. Radiographs, intraoral photographs, digital scans, treatment plans and research figures often need to be reviewed by a group at the same time. A shared screen allows a facilitator to pause on one finding, ask learners what they see and compare different interpretations before moving to a recommendation.

Hybrid learning and presentation reliability

Modern academic events may involve in-person participants, remote speakers, recorded materials and digital handouts. The best technology is usually the technology that works quietly: clear audio, readable screens, reliable connection options and simple controls. When the equipment becomes the centre of attention, learning suffers.

Privacy and clinical teaching materials

Clinical education sometimes uses patient-related material. Even when the discussion is educational, presenters should confirm that images, records and case details are handled according to the rules that apply at the time of use. When discussion matters more than equipment

The presence of technology does not guarantee thoughtful teaching. Some of the most useful moments in a seminar room happen when a facilitator stops the presentation and asks learners to explain what they see, what they do not yet know and how they would communicate the situation to a patient or colleague.
