The UBC Faculty of Dentistry’s 2011 account describes a mismatch. Students had access to a modern clinical environment, but suitable study and discussion areas were limited.
The old clinical space
Part of the former dental clinic in the John B. Macdonald Building had been decommissioned. The remaining operatory structures made renovation complicated and expensive.
The academic need
Students were using scattered study locations. The Faculty article records Amro Foda’s observation that the available study space did not match the quality of the new clinic.
The redevelopment
Small-group seminar rooms and flexible study space were created beside a computer learning centre. Both Kanani rooms were reported to have the same technology and large monitors.
The gift and naming
Support from Dr. Aly Kanani and his family was connected to the seminar rooms, which became Kanani Conference Room 1 and Kanani Conference Room 2.
The dedication
The rooms were unveiled on May 8, 2011. The official story was published in September and later appeared in the Fall 2011 issue of UBC Dentistry Impressions.
What remains to be confirmed today
Current room numbers, seating capacity, equipment, access and availability are operational facts that may have changed. They should be confirmed with UBC before an event or visit.
