UBC Dentistry reported that the rooms were unveiled on May 8, 2011, after old clinic space in the John B. Macdonald Building was converted into small-group seminar and study areas.
What was being dedicated
The names apply to two adjacent rooms: Kanani Conference Room 1 and Kanani Conference Room 2. The Faculty described the rooms as having the same technology and large monitors so student groups could work in comparable settings.
The purpose expressed at the ceremony
The official feature connected the gift to education as a social good and to the responsibility of professionals to give back. It also described the rooms as a legacy for dental students and as an expression of family admiration for the Faculty of Dentistry.

Dean Charles Shuler described the seminar rooms as an academic environment intended to encourage communication and partnership between students and faculty.
